‘Food for work’ project benefits quake survivors in Kavre villages

Dec 7, 2015- Sitaram Timalsina of Chyamrangbeshi-8 in the district is busy these days reconstructing earthquake-ravaged infrastructures in the district.
Villagers have constructed a four kilometre road section connecting Saldhara and Phurkethali villages. They also have buried the 2,100 meters pipe line. Twenty-three households in Phurkethali area started the development activities. “We also constructed roads in the past,” said Timalsina, adding that they have been reconstructing quake-damaged infrastructures on their own these days. Over 350 families in Chyamrangbeshi VDC started reconstructing damaged infrastructures in the area.
Villagers said they are also planning to carry out several other development activities. ‘Food for Work’ project of World Food Programme (WFP) helped villagers work for themselves. The programme has been providing 150 kilograms of rice and 27 kilograms of pulses to a family in exchange of work for 40 days. WFP Coordinator Minu Hada said they helped villagers in reconstruction by distributing food items.
The villagers have been clearing quake-ravaged infrastructures, constructing roads and canals. “At least, the villagers are forced to work for 20 days,” said Gopal Krishna Sapkota, a local resident. Villagers are also excited to work for food, Sapkota said.
The programme is also under way in Saldhara, Milche, Banakhu, Dadagaun, Gokule, Ghartichhap, Chya-mrangbeshi, Chyasingkharka, Salmechakal, Phalametar, Phoksingtar, Budhakhani and Banakhuchaur VDCs in the district. Around 6,483 quake victims have been living in the villages.
